Per quotes in Express & Star, departing West Brom man James Morrison has given his assessment of contract rebel Rekeem Harper.
What’s the word?
Harper is an extremely gifted footballer but it appears he could be on his way out of the Hawthorns when his contract expires at the end of the season.
Express & Star claim that he has refused to sign a final contract offer which means it’s highly likely he won’t be a Baggies player in 2019/20.
In recent weeks Celtic have been reported as potential suitors, per The Daily Record, who suggest the Hoops are in the race to sign the 19-year-old.
However, his former teammate Morrison has laid hints that he should stay at the club, sighting the lack of midfielders in the team. According to Express & Star, he said:
“In midfield (next season) there’s only Rak (Harper), Sam (Field), Jake (Livermore), and Chris (Brunt). He’s got a chance to play.
“Is he guaranteed that at Celtic? He’s not. And that’s a tough place to play too.”
A second chance for Harper?
For the sake of his own career it would make sense for Harper to stay for the time being, especially considering that Albion don’t have too much depth in midfield.
If he was to stay next term then he could become a crucial part of West Brom’s rebuild and alongside Sam Field. Indeed, their midfield would be set for years.
A new manager could be incredibly beneficial for the central midfielder as well.
Morrison is right to suggest he wouldn’t be guaranteed minutes at Celtic, laying down some home truths about Harper’s ability.

In reality the midfield man should stay and develop further. However, the poor attitude he displayed throughout some of the final matches of the season was a huge indicator that he didn’t want to be there. The fact he’s stalled over a new contract is evidence of that.
A host of young players have come and gone at Albion so Harper only needs to look at the likes of Izzy Brown to gain an understanding of the negatives of leaving for a big club.
As the Chelsea man has shown, the grass isn’t always greener.
