Manchester United fans have been warned by the club that they face punishment if they continue to sing an offensive chant about Romelu Lukaku’s penis.
The song, which alludes to the racial stereotype that black men are better endowed than others, has been heavily criticised.
Anti-racism group Kick It Out have called for the chant, which is not sung with an intention to discriminate, to be banned from the terraces.
Despite Lukaku himself asking the supporters to stop singing the chant, groups within the away section at St Mary’s during this afternoon’s 1-0 win over Southampton defied the request.
Following the match, the Red Devils released a statement on their official website confirming that they are liaising with the police and have asked for CCTV footage from the game.
The club have insisted that they aim to identify those who have “disrespected” Lukaku’s wishes not to sing the chant.
On Twitter, rival fans have criticised United’s following.
