Dean Smith has no need to panic buy in January should Chelsea recall Tammy Abraham amidst growing interest, for the ideal replacement is already at the club in Keinan Davis.
The Chalkboard
Following a long-term lay-off with a groin injury, Davis finally returned to action for Aston Villa at the weekend, as he took a spot on Smith’s bench.
The 20-year-old last featured at Villa Park in March and his development has been severely hampered by the persistent groin problem, but the versatile forward should be looked to if Chelsea activates their recall option on Abraham.
There have been reports in The Telegraph suggesting Chelsea could recall the Villans’ top goalscorer as Crystal Palace look to add another option up top to sTave off relegation.
Should the Blues opt to terminate the loan arrangement in place, they would be passing up on a sizeable promotion bonus, which could ensure Abraham stays in the Midlands until the summer rather than returning to London.
Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below...
Why is Davis the man?
Despite only scoring twice in last season’s play-off final run, Davis has the potential to replace Abraham should he return to London.
The Stevenage-born prospect is still only 20 and made his first start last term, so has plenty of time to develop, but his versatility will allow Smith to adopt tactics that incorporate the entire offence and does not keep the target man in one spot.
He will also know that his previous season was strong up until his injury, having caused teams a lot of issues, and it will provide a great platform to build from.
Why not Kodjia?
Kodjia has been a key figure for Smith since he took charge, but his main role of late has been playing on the left-flank.
It may not be where most of his goals have come from, but it better suits his strengths, particularly his desire to cut inside and take players on – which has resulted in 13 shots inside the box in seven games.
